UUM ONLINE: "The role of the university alumni is indisputable as they also form a significant contributing factor in the advancement and progress of the university.

"The proactive measures taken by UUM to strengthen the networking between the alumni and the university will instill a sense of belonging among the alumni and encourage them to give back to the university," stated the Chancellor of UUM, Yang Teramat Mulia Dato' Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Puteri Intan Safinaz Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah, Tunku Panglima Besar of Kedah (Member of the Kedah Council of Regency) at the Royal Alumni Gala Dinner at Mu'adzam Shah Hall, recently.

She added further that it might be impossible to get the involvement of all the alumni to work towards the success of the university agenda because, on average, only 21 percent of the alumni return to their university.

The Tunku Chancellor said that, to increase the participation of the alumni, UUM could make full use of the existing technological facilities and create websites and portals by which to interact with the alumni so that they will remain actively engaged with UUM.

In addition, she said, the university’s target of appointing a university alumnus as a member of the University Management Committee (JPU) was in accordance with the latest university statute, which allowed such a move.

"This means that the alumni will have a direct say in the matter regarding the direction that the university will take, hence, the alumni must showcase their strengths by fielding candidates who are qualified and competent to merit appointment as members of the body that shapes the vision and mission of the university.

"In fact, about 30 percent of the current workforce in UUM, which exceeds 3000, consists of UUM alumni. This includes the management and professional staff, academic staff, and administrative staff, thus demonstrating that the university recognises its own products by entrusting them with the task of developing the university," she said.

The Tunku Chancellor said that it was hoped that the alumni would also play their part in helping the university secure funds to cover the ever increasing management expenses.

She stated that, through the establishment of the Alumni Foundation, it was hoped that the alumni would be granted an opportunity to make financial contributions that would enable the university to set up an education fund and a welfare aid fund to help students in need.

"This will indirectly reduce the financial obligation of the university with regard to managing the students and this will allow the university to concentrate on efforts related to advancement in the field of research.

At the ceremony, the Tunku Chancellor also launched the book entitled 100 Outstanding Alumni and presented certificates to the representatives of the Outstanding Alumni. She also presented a cheque worth MYR70, 000 to the UUM Alumni Association, which was represented by Dato' Seri Dr. Shahidan Kassim, the President of the UUM Alumni Association.

The purpose of the Royal Alumni Gala Dinner was to foster networking between the alumni and the university. To date, UUM has produced a total of 123,169 graduates of various levels of education, involving both local and international graduates.

UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato’ Seri Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, said that the gala dinner was a platform for the alumni to interact, exchange views, and forge a better relationship with their alma mater.

He stated that the university appreciated the efforts of the alumni in helping the university become the Eminent Management University and that there had been quite a number of achievements, both academic and non-academic, garnered in recent years.

"Apart from this, to intensify the involvement of the alumni, the university plans to develop a mobile application with the alumni that will enable them to obtain the latest information about the university, fellow alumni, alumni events, and the UUM Alumni Chapters all over the country as well as overseas,” he added.

Meanwhile, UUM alumnus, Mohd Najib Abdul Hadi, said that he was delighted to be presented with the opportunity to participate in the very impressive event, which he was attending for the very first time.

He added that, the event would not only strengthen the ties between the alumni and the university, but also help to widen the business networking and the network of fellow alumni, as well," said the General Manager of Coway (M) Sdn. Bhd., who was also one of the eight recipients of the 100 Outstanding Alumni award under the Entrepreneur category.

Mohd Najib, better known as Ajib Adi, graduated in 2008 and became involved in sales and entrepreneurship soon after graduation. In fact, he was the youngest ever General Manager of Coway when he was appointed to the post in 2013, at the age of 27.

On his part, Dr. Marzuki Alie expressed his sincere congratulations to UUM on being able to draw together hundreds of alumni from across the country, including those from abroad.

"At the same time, I also feel proud to have been selected to receive this award, which, at one stroke, gives me the honour of promoting the good name of UUM on the world stage.

"To be successful, a student must be diligent, and the attainment of a student rests on their ability to recognise the opportunity that is presented and to utilise their potential to grasp the opportunity to achieve success," said the Rector of the University of Indo Global Mandiri (UIGM) and a PhD graduate from UUM in the field of Marketing Politics.

Also present at the gala dinner were member of the Kedah State Executive Council, Dato’ Dr. Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail, who represented the Menteri Besar; Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Dato’ Seri Dr. Shahidan Kassim, who is also the President of the UUM Alumni Association; Bukit Kayu Hitam Assemblyman, Dato’ Ahmad Zaini Japar; Members of the University Board of Directors; Members of University Management Committee (JPU); members of the UUM Alumni Association; and senior UUM officers.
